The independence solution to grue

چکیده

Abstract The paper presents a comprehensive solution to the new riddle of induction. Gruesome induction is blocked because “grue” not independent our sampling and observation methods. Before presenting my theory, I critically survey previous versions what call “independence strategy”, tracing strategy three different papers from 1970s by (respectively) Wilkerson, Moreland, Jackson. Next examine recent approaches Okasha, Godfrey-Smith, Schramm, Freitag. All these have their virtues, but none them rules out every problem case. Nor do any alone explain exactly goes wrong in all types gruesome reasoning. My account aims both. Learning lessons criticisms theories, argue that there are several crucial independence. Correct characterizations needed rule close suggesting independence can be adopted other approaches—Bayesians, fans natural kinds, pragmatists.

Green is Simpler than Grue ∗

Goodman’s grue-bleen paradox relies on the claim that the predicate “green” is not simpler than the predicate “grue”, and that, for that reason, the choice between them is arbitrary. It is argued that this claim can only be made in a restricted model, in which functions have primitive names but particular values do not. In more natural models, which allow values to have proper names as well, th...

Goodman, 'grue' and Hempel*

It is now commonly accepted that N. Goodman's predicate "grue" presents the theory of confirmation of C. G. Hempel (and other such theories) with grave difficulties. The precise nature and status of these "difficulties" has, however, never been made clear. In this paper it is argued that it is very unlikely that "grue" raises any formal difficulties for Hempel and appearances to the contrary ar...

Goodman’s “Grue” Argument in Historical Perspective

I will focus on arguments against classical deductive and inductive logic (“relevantist” and “grue” arguments). The talk is mainly defensive. I won’t offer positive accounts of the “paradoxical” cases I will discuss (but, see “Extras”). I’ll begin with Harman’s defense of classical deductive logic against certain (epistemological) “relevantist” arguments. Then, I’ll argue that if you like Harma...

Solution to “the Kuznets Riddle”

S. Kuznets's study that the average propensity to consume is a constant value were nexpected because they denied one of the basic provisions of the Keynesian theory. This fact was called "the riddle of Kuznets".  F. Modigliani and M. Friedman, using the hypothesis of the life cycle and the concept of constant income, proposed two options that explain its solution. But models should not explain,...

Cognitive Criteria for the Moral Solution of the False Brothers “Independence” and “Despotism” of Judges Based on Religious Sources

The independence of judges in arbitration is an important process that is mentioned in the one hundred and fifty-sixth article of the Constitution. The main issue of this research is the moral solution of the false brothers of independence and despotism in judgment. Judges sometimes become confused between the two when making decisions and sentencing, which can only be resolved by recognizing t...
